Enabled HiDPI on external monitor and now everything is tiny and hard to read

You turned on HiDPI mode to get a sharper image on your external display and yes, it looks crisper — but now the entire UI is microscopic. Text, icons, everything. You have to lean in to read anything and your eyes are exhausted after 20 minutes.

Why does this happen?

HiDPI mode tells macOS to render the display at double pixel density, resulting in sharper text and graphics. But if the screen resolution isn't high enough relative to the physical display size, the native HiDPI resolution makes the interface too small for comfortable viewing.

How to fix it

1

Go to System Settings → Displays → select your external monitor.

2

Choose a scaled resolution — look for options labeled Looks like X×Y and pick a comfortable size.

3

On macOS Ventura and later, you can drag the resolution slider directly.

4

Third-party tools like BetterDisplay give you finer control over scaling and HiDPI settings.
