Autocorrect silently changes your words and you don't notice until it's too late
You're typing away and macOS is quietly fixing your words in the background. You look up and half your message has been mangled. It's especially bad with technical terms, proper nouns, and anything slightly uncommon. And it happens without any obvious indication.
Why does this happen?
macOS has system-wide autocorrect enabled by default, which attempts to fix typos as you type. It works reasonably well for plain English prose but is notoriously bad with code, technical jargon, names, and abbreviations.
How to fix it
To disable autocorrect system-wide: System Settings → Keyboard → Text Input → Edit → uncheck Correct spelling automatically.
To fix a single correction in the moment: right after the word gets changed, press ⌘+Z to revert just that autocorrect.
To add exceptions: when autocorrect suggests a change, click the small popup to dismiss and add the word to your dictionary.
In Xcode, Terminal, and most coding apps, autocorrect is automatically disabled.
