Desktop icons don't snap to a grid — they just land wherever you drop them
Move a file on the desktop and it stays exactly where you dropped it, pixel-perfect chaos included. There's no magnetic grid pulling icons into neat rows. Your desktop slowly becomes a disaster zone.
Why does this happen?
macOS allows free-form icon placement on the desktop and in Finder windows by default. In practice, most people just want things aligned and have no idea snap-to-grid exists.
How to fix it
1
On the desktop, right-click on an empty area → Show View Options.
2
Check Snap to Grid to enable automatic grid alignment.
3
Click Sort By → Snap to Grid to snap existing icons into place immediately.
4
In Finder windows: View → Show View Options → same steps apply per-folder.
