Right-clicking in Finder has no New File option — you can't create a blank text file like on Windows

You right-click in a Finder folder expecting New Text Document or something like it. Instead you get New Folder and a bunch of other stuff, but nothing to create a blank file. It's bafflingly absent for anyone coming from Windows.

Why does this happen?

Apple never included a create new file option in Finder's context menu. The philosophy was that you create files from within apps, not from the file system. Reasonable in theory, deeply frustrating when you just want a quick blank .txt file.

How to fix it

1

In Terminal, navigate to your folder and run touch filename.txt to create a blank file.

2

Install a free app like New File Menu from the Mac App Store to add this option to Finder's right-click menu.

3

You can also create an Automator Quick Action and add it to Finder's context menu.
