Plugged in a USB drive but it's not showing up anywhere in Finder

You plug in a USB stick or external hard drive, your Mac makes the connection sound, but there's nothing in the Finder sidebar. No desktop icon either. You start wondering if the drive is broken or if your Mac even recognized it.

Why does this happen?

macOS hides external drives and media from the Finder sidebar and desktop by default. They're not missing — they're just not configured to show up. It's a weird default that catches pretty much everyone the first time.

How to fix it

1

In Finder, go to Finder menu → Settings → Sidebar tab.

2

Check External disks and CDs, DVDs, and iOS Devices to show them in the sidebar.

3

Under the General tab, enable External disks to show them on the desktop.

4

Your drive should now appear immediately.
