Finder doesn't show how many files are in a folder or how much disk space is left

The bottom of every Finder window is completely blank. You've got no idea how many items are in the folder you're looking at, and no quick way to check remaining disk space without opening a separate Get Info window.

Why does this happen?

The Finder status bar is hidden by default. Apple probably figured it was visual noise for casual users, but for anyone doing actual file management it's essential info.

How to fix it

1

In Finder, go to View menu → Show Status Bar.

2

The bottom of the Finder window will now show item count and available disk space.

3

This setting persists across Finder windows once enabled.
