The green maximize button doesn't maximize — it hijacks your whole screen into fullscreen mode

You click the green button expecting the window to fill your desktop like on Windows. Instead, the window takes over the entire display in its own Space, the Dock disappears, the menu bar hides, and suddenly you're trapped in what feels like a different dimension.

Why does this happen?

Apple repurposed the green button to trigger Full Screen mode instead of traditional maximize behavior. Full Screen creates a dedicated Space for the app — great for focus but terrible if you just wanted a bigger window.

How to fix it

1

To expand without going full screen: hold Option (⌥) and click the green button — the window fills the desktop without entering full screen mode.

2

To exit full screen: move cursor to the top to reveal the menu bar, then click the green button again or press ⌃+⌘+F.

3

Hover over the green button to get options: Enter Full Screen, Tile Window to Left/Right of Screen.
