macOS never offers to save passwords from Chrome or Firefox — only Safari gets that treatment

You create a new account in Chrome, type a strong password, and macOS never asks if you want to save it to Keychain. The password just disappears. Safari users get the save prompt every time, but use any other browser and you're on your own.

Why does this happen?

macOS Keychain password-saving is tightly integrated with Safari and works through Apple's browser APIs. Third-party browsers like Chrome and Firefox don't have access to trigger the native Keychain save dialog — they use their own built-in password managers instead.

How to fix it

1

Use the browser's built-in password manager: Chrome → Settings → Passwords. Firefox → Settings → Privacy & Security → Saved Logins.

2

Or switch to a cross-platform password manager like 1Password, Bitwarden, or Dashlane — these work in any browser and sync across devices.

3

If you want iCloud Keychain across browsers: Apple has an iCloud Passwords extension available for Chrome on macOS.
