Minimized windows disappear into the Dock and you can't find them anywhere

You hit ⌘+M to minimize a window and it just... vanishes. There's no taskbar showing open windows like on Windows. It shrinks into a tiny thumbnail hiding at the far right of the Dock, which is easy to miss if you have a lot of Dock icons.

Why does this happen?

macOS doesn't have a Windows-style taskbar. Minimized windows live in the Dock to the right of the app separator line, shown as small window thumbnails. It's a fundamentally different paradigm that catches every Windows switcher off guard.

How to fix it

1

Look at the right side of the Dock (after the divider line) for small window thumbnails.

2

Click a thumbnail to restore that window.

3

Use ⌘+Tab to switch apps, then click the app in the Dock to show its windows.

4

Tip: System Settings → Desktop & Dock → enable Minimize windows into application icon to keep the Dock less cluttered.
