Holding Option while clicking menu bar items reveals hidden options most people never know exist

Nobody tells you this when you get a Mac: holding Option (⌥) while clicking menu bar menus transforms them. The Wi-Fi menu shows diagnostic options. The Apple menu changes Sleep to Force Sleep. It's like a cheat code for your own computer.

Why does this happen?

Apple hides advanced and diagnostic options behind the Option key to keep menus clean for regular users. The options are always there — you just need to know to hold Option to surface them.

How to fix it

1

Hold ⌥ and click the Wi-Fi icon — you'll see signal strength, channel info, and Open Wireless Diagnostics.

2

Hold ⌥ and click the Apple menu — Sleep becomes Force Sleep, Restart loses its confirmation dialog.

3

In many app menus, hold ⌥ while the menu is open to see items change or new ones appear.

4

There's no master list — discovering them is half the fun.
