Files

Screenshots pile up on your desktop as PNG files instead of going to the clipboard

Every time you take a screenshot with ⌘+Shift+3 or ⌘+Shift+4, a new PNG file gets dumped on your desktop. You just wanted to paste a quick screenshot into Slack or an email, not create a file. After a week your desktop looks like a screenshot graveyard.

Why does this happen?

macOS defaults to saving screenshots as files on the desktop, following a long-standing convention that predates the quick paste workflow most people want today. The clipboard option exists but isn't the default.

How to fix it

1

To copy to clipboard instead of saving: add Control to your shortcut — ⌃+⌘+Shift+3 or ⌃+⌘+Shift+4.

2

To change the default behavior: ⌘+Shift+5 → Options → check Clipboard to always copy instead of save.

3

You can also set a custom save folder so screenshots don't clutter your desktop.
