Tapping the trackpad does nothing — you have to physically press it down to click
You tap the trackpad and nothing happens. You tap harder. Still nothing. Turns out you have to actually physically depress the trackpad like a button every single time to register a click. On a brand new Mac. Tap-to-click is off by default for some reason.
Why does this happen?
Apple disables tap-to-click by default, requiring a physical click press instead. This is probably to avoid accidental clicks for new users who rest their thumbs on the trackpad. The Force Touch trackpad doesn't actually physically move — the click is haptic feedback — so requiring a press is somewhat arbitrary.
How to fix it
System Settings → Trackpad → Point & Click tab.
Enable Tap to click.
While you're there, check Secondary click (right-click with two fingers) and adjust tracking speed.
