MacBook is plugged in but the battery is stuck at 80% and won't charge past it

Your charger is plugged in, the MagSafe ring is glowing, but the battery just sits at 80% and won't budge. You've tried unplugging and replugging. You're starting to think the charger or battery is broken.

Why does this happen?

This is Optimized Battery Charging, an intentional feature Apple introduced to reduce battery aging. macOS learns your charging habits and deliberately holds the charge at 80% if it predicts you'll be plugged in for a while, only charging to 100% shortly before you typically unplug.

How to fix it

1

To charge to 100% immediately: click the battery icon in the menu bar → Charge to Full Now.

2

To disable Optimized Battery Charging permanently: System Settings → Battery → uncheck Optimized Battery Charging.

3

Note: disabling it causes the battery to always charge to 100%, which is worse for long-term battery health.
