Close the MacBook lid to use only external monitor and the whole thing just goes to sleep
You want to use your MacBook with the lid closed and an external display. You connect the monitor, close the lid, and the screen goes black. The whole Mac is asleep.
Why does this happen?
MacBooks are designed to sleep when the lid closes. Running in clamshell mode requires the Mac to be connected to power and have a wake signal — like an external keyboard or mouse click after closing the lid.
How to fix it
Connect your external monitor, keyboard, and mouse BEFORE closing the lid.
Plug in your charger — power is required for clamshell mode.
Close the lid — the Mac will sleep briefly.
Press a key on your external keyboard or click your external mouse to wake it onto the external display.
On Apple Silicon Macs, apps like Amphetamine can prevent sleep on lid close without requiring an external keyboard.
